about

A Hyphen in Reverse

Spring 2010: Whenever I had the chance, I’d drive from Hamilton into Toronto to play in the weekly Morning Music sessions at Somewhere There, the now-legendary studio / performance space on Dufferin Avenue.

On a couple of these occasions, the musicians were Germaine Liu, John Oswald, and Scott Thomson. I felt privileged to add my double bass to this dynamic trio; everyone was such a great listener.

Must play with them again: this idea bugged me for years and years, until I couldn’t stand it anymore. Finally in 2019 I asked the musicians to come together one morning at Fort Rose Studios in Hamilton.

Two horns, bass and percussion: to me this feels like a jazz quartet. Jazz is an art of improvising on a motif or a premise, whether that premise is a 12-bar blues, a 32-bar song, a massive orchestral arrangement in changing metres, or that sound you’ve just heard – or are about to hear, hence the title.
